Change your environment. Change your life.

A Place to Call Your Own
Often times I go into people's homes and find that couples are not equally represented in the space. We all have different tastes and want to be surrounded with the things we love. Opposites seem to attract one another and sometimes, if the styles of the people you live with are different than your own, conflict can arise. “What should go above the mantle piece?” “The prize rifle that Joe’s father taught him how to shoot with, or a dried flower swag that Sarah made with her own hands.”

I find that designating a place for each person in the house is very important. Children often have their own rooms and their styles can be represented well there. If children share a room, divide the room in half and designate an area for each child so that their artwork and things they love can be represented there.

Couples share the whole house, which makes it even more important for both individuals to be represented in their own space.

My husband and I live in a small condo. We don’t have extra rooms to designate for him and for me, but we do have two bathrooms. One is his and one is mine. He decorates and cleans his bathroom himself. It is completely his and he can surround himself with the things he loves, but I don’t necessarily care for, and likewise for my bathroom.

If you don’t have the space to designate an entire room for each individual in the home, designating a desk or an area in a room will work just as well. I don’t recommend designating the garage for the husband as his sole space unless he is in agreement with that as well. It is nice if you both can have a room in the house that is your own.

In shared areas of the house, choose something to hang up that you both agree on and lovingly place it there for all to see. It will represent “peace” for both of you.
